This Blog post is based on the forgetting curve and everything we need to know about it and how we can combat it. I hope you find this blog post helpful in any way. I hope you enjoy!

Introduction

Studies show that we lose most of the information that we learn on the day we learn it. This is known as the forgetting curve. Not to worry though, as we can interrupt The Forgetting curve by using two study techniques!

Main Bulk

What is the Forgetting Curve?

The forgetting curve hypothesizes the decline of memory retention in time. This curve shows how information is lost over time when there is no attempt to retain it. A related concept is the strength of memory that refers to the durability that memory traces in the brain.

The Forgetting Curve

As we can see on this graph above, over time all the information you learn will slowly decline. The best two ways to combat this is by using Space Repetition and Active Recall. Studies have shown that these to study techniques have resulted in the best grades on average.

What is Spaced Repetition?

Spaced Repetition revolves around the idea of consistently studying something over a period of time so you build stronger links to the information.

Example:

I will study the Olbers Paradox on the 20th Feb

If I was to only study this once then overtime my knowledge on the subject will deteriorate and I will not remember as much.

So the trick is to repeat the subject over a certain time period. After you repeat it a few times you will not need to repeat it as frequently because the links between the information is very strong in your brain. Using this with Active Recall (Which I have mentioned a lot on this Blog) makes for a very good combined study strategy.

I hope that you learned something new from this Blog Post and I hope that it benefits you in some form. Thank you very much for reading and I hope you have a very good day!
